The One Where I Get My Boyfriend to Talk About Makeup

I actually had a conversation about makeup the other day with my boyfriend that HE INITIATED. This is a big deal guys; this is a man who wouldn't even know I wore makeup if I didn't talk about it incessantly. He actually told me, "I like your makeup today." My first instinct was to squint at him suspiciously and ask if he wanted something. He looked at me confused and repeated himself and added, "I like the green eyeshadow on you." This is the guy who when I asked if my lipgloss looked okay he asked me why I was wearing slime on my lips. So after I remembered to thank him for the compliment on my makeup I asked him, "So,  green eyeshadow looks best one me?" And he thought a moment (and this is normally a topic that bores him to tears) and answered, "Yeah I think so, I don't like when you wear bronze. It doesn't look good." And by bronze he means all metallic eyeshadow except for silver. Not that I care that he doesn't like it; I wear it anyway. I ask him, "Do you think bronze eyeshadow looks bad on everyone or just me?" His answer, "Well, everyone mostly, but I think on you it looks weird because your skin is so pale." And because none of my friends care about makeup, that was the most exciting makeup conversation I have ever had in real life, haha. Oh! And the other day we actually had a few sentence conversation about eye shadow primer. After I explained to him what it is and what it does he said, "That's pretty cool. I bet more girls would like makeup if they knew how to make their eyeshadow stick to their eyeballs longer."  It's so cute that he makes an effort to be interested in my hobbies for my sake. Just wanted to share. Does anyone else have any stories involving makeup and their significant others or other clueless guy friends? Story time!

And just so this isn't a picture-less post, here is a swatch of my current favorite lip combo- Evil Shades Féline's Kyss over NYX Fig lipstick.

Thank you for reading and have a great day/night/whatever!

  1. I said today I was going to do a look based on Genie from Aladdin and my bloke came out with 'Oh you should do Arabic style eyeliner.' WHAT THE FUCK, BOYFRIEND?! I didn't even know he knew that existed! I was dead impressed!

  3. haha, that was cute. my bf doesn't take issue with my makeup and will even buy me gift cards to buy it, but he never has any opinions. Once he kind of said he likes when I don't wear much, but I'm not even totally sure that's what he meant

  4. My boyf is a bit of an artsy diva himself... he's a musician, into hair and skin, who has just recently gotten into painting. Makeup isn't *his* thing, but he can still appreciate it. So I always share my hauls with him, and we'll "ooh" and "ahh" over everything together. He even went out of his way to take me to the MAC store in Tampa when he was still living in St Pete. Cos he's awesome like that :3

I can't get him to branch out into makeup artistry, though. I keep badgering him, cos male make-up artists are hawt, but he just won't budge XD

  5. Haha. He sounds just like my boyfriend with the "slime on the lips" comment. My bf reckons I look best with no makeup on. Yeah, right. Dark circles under my eyes are so sexy. He enjoys it when I wear red eyeshadow though. Not that I wear it all that often.

  6. Aww, that's sweet. My boyfriend doesn't mind makeup much (you saw that post where I put green eyeshadow on him). I think, being a poet, he understands art and he knows what creativity is, so he knows that makeup is just another way to be creative.

I remember when we first starting dating, he didn't like the red lipstick. Now he just deals with it. :P

  7. "And by bronze he means all metallic eyeshadow except for silver." LOL too funny!

My SO is a typical guy in the sense that he likes four-wheelers, cars, and fixes everything himself. However, he can hold his own in makeup-related conversations. I have so many funny stories, like once a male friend of his said he had a make-up test to take and he instantly thought of a test on make-up instead of what he really meant (a test to make up for the one he missed). He also knows the brand MAC and always notices when I do my makeup really nice (especially eye makeup). He recently told me that he can see the texture of my foundation on my face. lol! They are like kids on this topic because they sometimes say things that aren't very nice without realizing it. It is too cute though. We look at my makeup hauls together and he accompanies me on makeup trips sometimes. He is also now hooked on Bath and Body Works hand soaps, body washes and candles thanks to me, too!

  8. Hahaha, this post made my crack up! My BF is the exact same. Sometimes he never says ANYTHING. Every now and then he says "you look nice!" I think I need to stop him and have him break it down for me :P

Sometimes when I paint my nails I pick a few colors and then make him choose :P

  9. My husband went to massage school and had a polarity queen/massage therapist mother... so... makeup. He gets it and color matching more than I do (I go fish and hunt now, amirite? ;) ) Basically he's my opposite: more understanding, emotional, and aware. I'm more blunt, oblivious, and color-blind. I usually double check outfits with him before I leave the house. ;)

  10. What a cute story. ^__^
My boyfriend doesn't care about makeup. Haha.
He doesn't like me wearing makeup but I love it too much.

  11. Cute story! My boyfriend listens to me talk about makeup all the time. Until recently, I never thought he *actually* listened until he saw the beauty blender somewhere and was like that's the egg thing (I knew what he was talking about) you want right? Lol. :)

  12. Nice lip combo! LOL to everyone's stories as well, if men are good for anything, I guess it is to amuse us sometimes.

  13. My boyfriend is probably one of the manliest men I've ever met (Just like my Dad, really. Cue jokes about girls falling for men who resemble their Dad), but after 2+ years together he knows my skin type, skin concerns, shade, what works for me and what doesn't in general when it comes to skincare and/or makeup. I've learnt the hard way to ignore his advice at my own peril- we usually debate on what is good/works for me or not, and most of the time his suggestions/advice actually wins. What's more, he has no qualms going into a store and getting skincare/makeup stuff for me.

And despite giving me suggestions on my make-up, he absolutely refuses to allow me to apply eyeliner on him, just to see how it looks :(
