FOTD: Binging on Purple Poppies

Ugh, I'm terrible with naming things! One time I had a Siberian Dwarf Hamster named Leonard Nimoy, but that's only because my boyfriend named him. So, when all else fails for FOTD post names, I just do a play on the names of the products I used. Urban Decay eyeliner in Binge and Kiss My Sass eyeshadow in Purple Poppy makes "Binging on Purple Poppies"! I used several eyeshadows, so I could have easily went with "Blizzard on a Victorian Night", but I'm a sucker for alliteration. My angst-y teenage poetry was pure alliteration.  It was terrible (Here is a sample I remember- "Shadows slide and slither across a dust-laden shrine.."), but with alliteration you can fool people into thinking you know what you're doing. Isn't that how to get ahead in life? Not actually being competent, but just fooling people into believing you are? Politicians build their whole lives around it! But, I digress. I'm not sure how I went from poppies to politicians (alliteration!) but I sure can ramble can't I? Ramble on! (Anything for a Led Zep reference!)

FOTD: What a Darling Girl!

I can't believe that I have only ever placed one (tiny) order with Darling Girl cosmetics. I absolutely love Susan, the owner, and the products, so what has stopped me from placing more orders? My wishlist is longer thank my bank account can support. I'm so indecisive that I can't narrow down my order so I end up buying nothing! Isn't that pathetic? Haha. Has that ever happened to anyone else? Feel free to tell me yes so I don't feel stupid on my own.

And this is for Maribeth, since she always comments on my pre-FOTD picture disclaimers- Yes, I looker uber derpy in these pictures. Oh well. I am willing to sacrifice my image of perfection in everyone's head for the greater good of makeup (/snark). I'll put the least derpy picture first, as to not scare the children.

EOTD with Darling Girl Cosmetics

I haven't been wearing makeup most days for the past few months because I don't really see the point in wearing a full face of makeup up just to sit at home.  Although sometimes I will play around with it, but I usually remove whatever I put on right after.  So I was a bit excited to be returning to school this summer just because I would get more chances to wear makeup again, yay!  But, I seem to value my sleep more than I care about putting on makeup so as it turns out most days have been pretty minimal makeup-wise.

But one day I was determined to use my Darling Girl eyeshadows so I did.  Unfortunately I wasn't completely happy with the way my eyes turned out.  Not because of the eye shadows themselves, but because of what I layered them over.  I used a base of elf' cream shadow in Candlelight and it completely sucked up all the pretty shimmer/duochrome-ness from the eye shadows and left them looking more flat than they really are.  Needless to say I won't be using it as a base when I want super sparkly eyes (which is most of the time actually).  I really like how my lips turned out, though!  But first the eyes.

 

 This is a base of elf Candlelight with My Little Pony on the lid and Sparklers At Dawn in the crease.  The lower lashline is Clusterfluff over elf Candlelight.  The black liner is a felt tip pen liner by Physician's Formula.

See what I mean?  My Little Pony is actually light purple with green shimmer... and this just looks silver. And Sparklers At Dawn is a blue-leaning dark silver with lots of multi-colored sparkles and over the elf cream shadow is just looks grey.  I sort of like the look, but it completely misrepresents the actual color/sparkle of the Darling Girl shadows.  Check my swatches from here to see the colors I used more accurately.

Darling Girl Cosmetics Swatches and Review

I've had my Darling Girl order for awhile but I'm just now posting the review because Susan reopened the store yesterday.  I didn't want to tease you guys by posting about things you couldn't currently buy.  And believe me, you will want to buy them!

This is going to be another overly gushing review of an indie makeup company.  I LOVE Darling Girl and can't wait to place another order. The prices are great, the quality is amazing, the owner, Susan, is extremely nice and helpful, and the store in general seems different and unique from other companies.  They are also constantly adding new and different products.

Everything was packaged super cute.  The pink bag is the So Sakura gift set with a Petit (what they call their mini size) eyeshadow and a mini lipgloss.  The box has 5 samples that were from a blogger's sample pack for review.  The yellow wrapped tissue paper has a mini lip gloss and two Petit eyeshadows.  The two samples in the front were freebies.

The whole order laid out.  The top row had 3 Petit eyeshadows and two mini lip glosses (or Liquid Kisses).  The middle row is eyeshadow sample bags and the bottom row has a tinted lip balm sample and two blush samples.

The bottom labels of the Petit eyeshadows.  Ingredients aren't listed on the jars, which may bother some people, but they are listed on the shop's website.

Each jar has a sticker over the sifter.  I like how it has a pull tab.  It makes the sticker way easier to get off.

Here are the eyeshadows.  As I usually do they first row is patted on dry while the bottom row is over Pixie Epoxy.

The eyeshadows I have may not be the boldest, brightest colors, but they are very unique and gorgeous.  They are also very shimmery.  Just look at this next picture to see how much.

The eyeshadows are smooth and pigmented and not powdery.  I had no issues with fallout, even when not using a sticky base.

These are blushes.  The swatches for each color on the left are straight out of the bag while the right swatches are blended out.  I love how the sparkle doesn't disappear when you sheer them out. And I love the two different finishes.  The pink one has a pretty gold sparkle while the orange has a blue/violet duochrome sheen.  These are probably my favorite indie blushes I have tried so far.

Shy Girl is extremely pigmented for a tinted lip balm.  I can't wait to buy it in a full size.  It feels like an extremely moisturizing lipstick.  The Liquid Kisses are wonderful, too.  They aren't thick or sticky at all.  They are a bit on the medium-sheer side with one swipe, but they build up in pigmentation extremely well. These also feel smooth and moisturizing with not completely long lasting.  I think So Sakura lasts about and hour and a half to 2 hours on me, which isn't too bad for a non-sticky gloss.
